What are the humanities?

“The humanities are not abstruse studies that are distant from the praxis of daily life. Nor are they ornaments or the pursuits of a handful of wandering souls. They must be seen, fundamentally, with the concerns, the key questions, that assault us as part of humankind. They relate to our expressive ability to create new ways of understanding the world. They go into greater depth into the historical factors that explain our roots. They penetrate, with their spirit of free inquiry, into the mists of the future.”

(Arturo Morales Carrión, Humanist of the Year 1989)
